Flying Disc FUN!!

Hope you are staying warm with this sudden change of temperature! This week I would like to summarize what our division 2 students are working on, as well as share some great activities that you and your family can do at home to reinforce what we are learning at school!

Students in grades 3 thru 6 are working on developing their frisbee skills. We have been learning how to throw forehand and backhand, catching and passing the frisbee throughout the month of October. As we wrap up October we are now using our skills to play the two common sports associated with frisbee: Frisbee Golf and Ultimate Frisbee!

Frisbee is an easy and inexpensive sport to play with your family.  Please visit the links below to find some great games you and your family can try to reinforce these skills at home! As well as keeping your family active too!

Giving Thanks for the love of movement

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend with your family and take the time to be thankful for all of life's blessings even during the current pandemic. Take time to enjoy some exercise and fresh air with loved ones this weekend to recharge for the challenges ahead.

This week I would love to share some family activity ideas from Active for Life! Please consider visiting their website for additional resources to keep your family active!

1) Visit an orchard to take part in some fall harvesting, such as the The Jungle Farm

2) Rake the leaves and make a Leaf Maze

3) Hit the trails and enjoy a fall hike to appreciate the beautiful colors of autumn!

4) Purchase a pumpkin to decorate for fall! Or practice your basic skills of rolling your pumpkin and knocking over a pile of leaves with pumpkin bowling!

5) Climb a tree or collect some leaves for a fall craft!

6) Just roll with it and practice rolling down a hill to connect with nature! An old classic!

7) Become an autumn ninja and complete a fall Scavenger Hunt!

8) Football for all this Thanksgiving! Toss the pigskin around with family in the backyard!

9) Visit the farm for some good old-fashioned fun, such as: Calgary Farm Yard

10) Practice gratitude by taking time to relax with family and discuss how your family is blessed this long weekend!

October Fitness Challenge

Hello!

Well September flew by and we are now into October!

Reflecting on our first month of PE the students learned the importance of living a balanced lifestyle in order to grow and develop into a strong and healthy adult.

We used the acronym S.P.A.R.K. to remind us of the 5 key ingredients to living a balanced lifestyle...

S Select Fruits and Veggies when snacking (try for 5-10 servings a day)

P Play actively for 60 minutes daily

A Avoid sugar and fat in your diet

R Reduce screen time to less than 2 hours a day

K Keep hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day

All students worked on getting back into shape after being away from school for so long with our 5 components of health related fitness activity cards:

1) Cardio-vascular Endurance

  •     is that heart pumping, out of breath exercise such as running, soccer, swimming, basketball, hockey or playing tag

2) Muscular Endurance

  • how long can your muscles work before getting tired

3) Muscular Strength

  • how strong your muscles are

4) Flexibility

  • is stretching your muscles through a full range of motion

5) Body Composition and Diet

  • your body's ratio of muscle and fat as well as eating a well rounded diet from the Canadian food guide

As we move through October I would love to encourage your family to visit the BOKS Canada (Build Our Kids Success) website to sign up for the monthly fitness calendar with daily activities for you and your family to stay active. BOKS Canada also has a face book page and you tube channel for interactive videos to keep your family moving!
